Officials have stated that Lacey’s intention was to be a hero, because he was desperately in need of recognition. Lacey was fairly new to the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department.
So what does this say about society? Individuals are constantly searching to find a way to be on top. Why does this seem to happen? One possible answer to this question could be that heroes are deemed “cool”, brave, and one in a million.
Maybe Lacey was tired of being the under dog and wanted a chance to be taken seriously. But the way he went about things was totally out of line and insane. One has to wonder, is Lacey mentally stable? The sequence of events seems odd! Because Lacey did know the people with whom he staged the fire.
Did he see this on T.V.? The entire thought process does not make sense and what he believed would happen seems too good to be true. He though he could be the first one to receive the call, rush to the site, and run in to save four people.
Personally, I find the entire story absolutely devastating. The message that the media (film-makers, producers, and networks) portrays at times seems to be jaded. However, I do believe justice was served. You simply cannot attempt to take a life in hopes of being a hero, because society will never see you as such. Instead, society will look at you as a “nut case.”
